i spy: shades of teal.
much like its cool cousin green, deeper darker shades of teal and turquoise are popping up all over the place. it's a real colorfest out there, people, so you may want to add a dash of your own if you care much about being on trend. i'm not sure i can do it but i know that i certainly admire it from afar. there's nothing quite like a splash of teal to remind you of far off places — like mexico, morocco or spain. there's definitely an exotic feel to these rooms, and they're beckoning me to take a trip.

the gutsy ones.
sometimes i spend time looking at rooms that may seem completely over the top, but somehow look just fabulous. they draw me in — mostly with pure admiration for the bravado of the designer. designers like wary meyers, kelly wearstler or jonathan adler take rooms to the edge of their imagination and don't give a damn what we think — but we usually end up oohing and ahhing. their use of pattern and bold colors may not be something some of us could live with on a day to day basis, but what i like to do is kind of dissect the rooms and cull the ideas i think could work for me, in say perhaps a little less dramatic way — a print or pattern pairing, or a color palette; the use of artwork or a mix of genres. i stumbled upon this great pinboard and discovered some real beauties. here's to celebrating the extremes and finding the gems that ignite our own creativity.
lotusland.
i grew up in southern california, so i'm not sure why i've never heard of lotusland. i discovered this amazing place via diane keaton's pins and got curious about where this lotusland was — and lo and behold it's in my own very own backyard in santa barbara — about two hours north of los angeles. lotus land is the historic estate of Madame Ganna Walska, a polish opera singer who up until the last few years of her life, was the feisty, eccentric “head gardener” of Lotusland. she died in 1984, leaving her jewel of a garden to the Ganna Walska Lotusland Foundation.
“My home in Santa Barbara is known as Lotusland. During the last 25 or more years I have greatly expanded the 40 acres of this property, devoting myself exclusively to establish and increase the already valuable collection with great variety of species, such as Palms, Cycads, etc., from all around the world in a picturesque display and setting.” – Madame Ganna Walska
i don't know about you, but a pink palace surrounded by cacti is right up my alley, so i'm planning on visiting lotusland and paying homage to madame ganna in the very near future! you can make reservations here.
Can we give a round of applause for this home?
This is very similar to my bedroom inspiration. A bedroom that has so many textures and creates a moody, modern, relaxing atmosphere with some glam and edge. Velvet, Moroccan wedding blankets, a plush rug, mirrored and chrome details are all elements I have and want for my bedroom retreat. It's monochromatic but isn't boring because it's layered with textures to keep it interesting.
That's not where it ends. Check out this living room space. The coffee table is a piece of art and the palette is calming and warm.
Although I hate the infamous hand chair, this room reminds me of something Kelly Wearstler would approve of. I wish I had another angle of the banquette because it looks beautiful. I especially like how gold plays off the grays and the gunmetal chain drapes gives it edge. You can see the rest here.

Tuesday’s Tips: Ideas for master bedrooms…
Oftentimes I watch HGTV and get tickled at the amount of people that request such large sized bedrooms. They just CANNOT live with a smaller room. The entire house could fit the rest of their needs and be in the school districts they want but if the bedroom has a small square footage, they will pass. I understand no one wants a cramped space. I also understand you want adequate room for foot traffic and drawer clearance. It’s just funny because most of the time when they go back and show how the people live after moving in, they never really utilize the space that they have. A lot of the times the bedrooms are huge and empty with a lot of dead space. If you find yourself with the pleasure of having to figure out how to design a bedroom that is sizeable, then here are ideas.
Create a living room space. Yep, a living room. You have the room for it so you might as well invest in a small loveseat and coffee table area.
I know most would frown upon this and I do as well (if you work from home). Otherwise, if you use the computer for leisure purposes, I don’t see a problem creating a computer space in your bedroom for web surfing, shopping, blogging and social media.
Create a reading corner. All you need is a side table, a comfy chair, an ottoman and reading lamp.

at home in helsinki.
this is the latest project from Helsinki-based interior designer and freelance decorating editor Laura Seppänena and Photographer Pauliina Salonen. a sweet 52 square meter two-room apartment near the Helsinki centre with fresh, clean Scandinavian vibe and just the right amount of vintage paired with newer pieces brings a warm, serene and cosy feeling to the apartment. The residents' love for Danish design and the color blue shows throughout the whole interior and the use of soft wooden tones and graphic patterns on the fabrics creates a playful and lively space.

marfa part deux: the rock city house.
as promised, here's the second half of my tour of our home away from home last weekend in marfa, texas. if the love house wasn't sweet enough, meet the Rock City House at Corte del Norte — both airbnb's designed and renovated by garza marfa. the Rock City House is a little more modern, with white laminated floors, jonathan adler needlepoint pillows, mid-century modern furnishings throughout, but paired with a touch of texas like leather chairs, lyle lovett concert posters and cowhide rugs. both airbnb's were amazing and perfectly paired — i'd stay there again in a second. since they sleep so many people, i couldn't help but think they'd make a great workshop retreat space — so much creativity and soul in a couple of neighboring rental houses.
