unexpected guests: jessica comingore.

stylish glendale california home tour / sfgirlbybay

i’ve been following jessica comingore around the internet for as long as i can remember, admiring her from afar. but recently, after moving to jessica’s native city of los angeles we ran into each other and finally met face to face. we then met up for coffee and i asked jessica if i might share a tour of her lovely glendale home (which i’d also been long admiring/stalking). she kindly agreed and then very, very kindly agreed to photograph it herself for us — win, win! jessica is a designer and photographer and runs a creative studio out of Los Angeles offering both of those services. she also spend her days art directing and creating content for a lifestyle blog she’s been running since 2007. Glendale is located on the east side of Los Angeles, sort of situated between Atwater Village and Pasadena, and jessica’s home there is as charming as you might imagine if you’ve been following her on her very popular pinterest boards, and equally popular instagram feed — and if you’ve haven’t you’re in for a treat. let’s take a peek!

What is your idea of a perfect day in L.A.? What do you show friends and family when they come to visit?
This is a hard one. I have a few different scenarios that constitute a dream day for me, but one of my favorite ways to start the day (and I always recommend to visitors) is a sunrise hike at Griffith Park. I’m definitely an early bird and love that feeling of being out and about before the rest of the city is awake. I like to follow up the hike with a cup of tea at the Trails Cafe, and then get lost in a good book store like Arcana or Skylight. No perfect day is complete without something tasty to eat, and the happy hour at L&E is one of my favorites (oysters and rosé, say no more).

Any favorite L.A. secret spots we should know about?
Though it’s a bit of a trek, I always encourage people to schedule a visit to the Eames House in Pacific Palisades. There’s something about the energy there that is so serene; you can quite literally whisk away an afternoon just wandering around the property and studying its bones. In general though, I love to explore L.A.’s architectural gems in my spare time, and would also recommend the Neutra VDL House in Silver Lake, and the Schindler House in West Hollywood.

What’s the easiest way for you to find inspiration?
Being out in nature. Whether it’s a solo morning hike or a camping trip somewhere new, being outdoors refreshes my eye and mind in a way that nothing else quite can.

What’s your favorite feature in your home?
I love the architectural details from when it was built in the early 1920’s — the arched doorways, the fireplace (though I wish it were real), the door hardware. There’s even a tiny window built into the front door so you can check to see who’s knocking.

Who would you like to sit down to drinks or tea with?
In regards to design, I’d have to say Margaret Howell. I really adore the way she approaches aesthetics and her unwavering dedication to quality. Outside of design, Larry David. Aside from being a comedic genius, I really appreciate the way he approaches his work. Subtle and strategic.

Do you have a guilty pleasure or indulgence?
Does sugar count? I have such a sweet tooth, it’s nearly impossible to tame. No day is complete without a bite of chocolate or a cookie. But chocolate is healthy, right?

What souvenir did you bring back from your last trip?
I have some amazing rocks from a hike I took with my aunt near her home in Wyoming. There’s an area at around 8,000 feet elevation where the mountainside is covered in fossils from when that area used to be underwater. Kind of hard to wrap your head around.

What are some of your favorites websites/blogs to visit?
I love 101 Cookbooks for its endless array of vegetarian recipes. I also enjoy T Magazine for it’s tasteful take on art and culture today. OKREAL also has some wonderfully inspiring interviews with women in business.

Do you have any favorite Instagrammers?
Too many! And there seem to be more I discover by the week. I always love @charlottebland’s feed for her stunning use of light and a peek into life in London. @mgracejewelry makes some of my favorite pieces and her photos always transport me to someplace peaceful. @local_milk is also a favorite for her impeccable styling and timeless recipes.

What do you currently have playing on your turntable?
I’ve been spending a lot of time with Kurt Vile’s earlier records lately, but when I come home at night, it’s all about Wes Montgomery on the record player.

What does success mean to you?
To me, success means waking up every morning excited for what you do. It’s about balancing work and life in a way that encourages a healthy mind and body, allowing you to be your best self to those around you.

What do you think is most valuable: drive, talent, or luck?
Drive. If you can visualize a goal and are willing to put in the work, you can truly do anything you set your mind to.

What is your idea of living hell?
Ha! Going to a mall during Christmas. [ EDITOR’S NOTE: HELL, NO, DON’T GO. ]
